There was a man.
He is a person who, at the age of over 50, desperately needs something to sustain him. The past three or so years have stained the world with distrust, and he has grown weary of being burdened by human relationships, to the point of wanting to break away. He faced indifferent instructions from his workplace superior, betrayal by office colleagues, and even a false accusation of assault...
Despite testimony from colleagues that the assault did not occur, the man was wrongfully convicted and fined. He also cried secretly in the futility that seemed to push everything in the world away from him.
And around that time, a peculiar odor began to emanate from the man's body. The room he occupied exuded an overpowering scent, so intense that his family members couldn't bear to be in there, suffering from headaches and difficulty breathing. Initially, they were clueless about the source of this unfamiliar smell at home. However, as time passed, the odor grew stronger, and it seemed to follow the man wherever he went, making it impossible not to notice. Even one of the family members, who was also experiencing a lot of stress due to the man's situation, had a pungent smell emanating from a specific part of their body (around the nipple area).
During the course of the incident, stress was simmering around them like a volcano on the verge of eruption due to various reasons such as a lack of communication, sharpness from psychological issues, a lack of mental resilience, and worsening financial circumstances.
Then one day, the man decided to drop the lawsuit. None of the evidence he presented was accepted, and the refusal of witnesses to attend made winning the case seem unlikely. After years of living under immense pressure, his health began to suffer. The decision he made while visiting the hospital was to live the rest of his life for himself without the stress. So, every weekend, he would venture into nature, and at home, he would indulge in his favorite music or movies, trying to rediscover a sense of relaxation he had long forgotten. He also started exercising, all in the hope of finding some peace in the past six months.
He decided to start playing the guitar that he wanted to learn when he was young. He manages to register with the institute, searches for a guitar, and presses the purchase button.
The registration and other purchases happened within just one day, and from that day on, the man's scent began to disappear. Even on cold winter mornings when he went to work, he would open the window to eliminate any odors, run a fan, and used to frequently wash his clothes and blankets, but now, the frequency of those actions has decreased.
Stress and Physical Health
The above story shows how serious mental stress and pressure affect the body. Stress from mental pain has broken the balance of daily life and affected the people around you. However, as a man's psychological changes gradually change his lifestyle and make efforts to overcome his mental illness, it gives positive signals to his health. This case may be a common story around him. It also shows the effects of stress on the body, psychological changes, and how to overcome and get better in the process.
I had an experience where I was admitted to two different departments at a large hospital in the past. The first ward I was admitted to had relatively few seriously ill patients, but the second ward I was moved to after surgery had patients whose conditions were not very good, with more than one person passing away daily. Life in that ward was quite challenging because it had a peculiar smell that induced severe headaches. At first, I wondered, 'What is this smell?' but later, I came to understand, 'Oh, this is the smell coming from the patients.' I also learned that the smell varied from person to person and could change in intensity and character based on their health condition.
Body odor and health conditions
Body odor reflects one's health status. Changes in body odor can be important signals sent by the body, so it's essential to pay close attention if you notice an unusual smell. For example, a pungent and strong odor can indicate stress, hormonal changes, and even infection. Just think about trained cancer detection dogs, which can detect the unique odor associated with cancer for early detection. It's evident how significant body odor can be as a sign.
Stress and Hormonal Changes
When stress occurs, our body initiates the 'fight or flight' response. One of the most direct impacts of this response is hormonal changes; when we experience stress, our bodies release stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.
These hormonal changes can affect various bodily systems, including the immune system, metabolic processes, and the cardiovascular system. They can lead to a range of physical issues, with common symptoms such as headaches, muscle pain, digestive problems, and skin issues. Additionally, stress can influence body odor because it affects sweat gland activity, altering the amount and scent of sweat produced. Stress-induced sweat often results in a stronger odor.
Moreover, when stress becomes chronic and excessive, it can lead to severe health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and depression. Weight gain and other health issues due to intense stress are commonly observed. For example, Cushing's syndrome is a condition attributed to excessive stress hormone secretion, which disrupts the immune system and causes various illnesses. It can even lead to osteoporosis at a young age due to impaired bone cell activity.
Stress is a signal our bodies send to protect us, but if not managed and regulated properly, it can become a daunting signal that inflicts more suffering on the receiver than the giver of stress.
The Relationship Between Stress and Sweat Glands
In the human body, there are primarily two types of sweat glands: eccrine sweat glands and apocrine sweat glands. Eccrine sweat glands are distributed throughout the body and primarily secrete sweat for temperature regulation. In contrast, apocrine sweat glands are located in areas like the armpits, groin, and around the nipples, and they respond to emotional states such as stress, sexual arousal, and fear by producing sweat. While not apocrine sweat glands, it's common to see people experiencing sweaty palms when they're nervous, highlighting how easily stress can affect our bodies.
Activation of Apocrine Sweat Glands
Stress stimulates the secretion of adrenaline and cortisol while also activating apocrine sweat glands. When these apocrine sweat glands are stimulated, they produce more sweat. The sweat secreted by apocrine glands contains proteins, fatty acids, steroids, and other compounds. When broken down by skin bacteria, it produces a distinctive strong odor. Therefore, the increased activity of apocrine sweat glands due to stress can intensify body odor, potentially causing discomfort in social situations.
In the case of women, the secretion of apocrine sweat glands may vary due to physiological changes related to hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and more. In men, the activation of apocrine sweat glands is most pronounced in areas such as the armpits, groin, around the nipples, scalp, and facial hair (especially the beard area). Among these, the armpits are particularly noticeable for increased apocrine sweat gland activity, resulting in more sweat secretion in response to stress or emotional changes.
The Interaction Between Apocrine Sweat Gland Secretions and Bacteria
The skin functions as a habitat for a diverse array of microorganisms, encompassing various bacteria, viruses, and fungi, thereby establishing a unique micro biome. This micro biome plays a pivotal role in skin health, as shifts in the immune system due to stress can trigger disruptions, resulting in the overgrowth or depletion of specific bacterial strains, leading to an imbalance. Excessive proliferation of select bacteria can lead to complications such as inflammation, infections, and the emergence of body odor. Notable bacterial residents on the skin include Streptococcus, Corynebacterium, Staphylococcus, Propionibacterium, among others.
The sweat emanating from apocrine sweat glands engages in a complex interplay with the bacteria residing on the skin's surface, resulting in the production of a distinctive odor upon breakdown. Specifically, Corynebacterium emerges as a prominent player in the degradation of apocrine sweat gland secretions, giving rise to a robust scent. During this metabolic process, volatile compounds are generated, contributing to the unique olfactory signature. It's worth noting that the nature of this odor can exhibit variations, influenced by an individual's lifestyle, hygiene practices, and inherent physiological traits.
Stress Management Techniques
Physical and mental health maintenance requires effective stress management. Here are some effective stress management techniques:
- Appropriate Exercise: Regular exercise reduces stress hormones and increases endorphins, which improve mood. Engage in easily accessible activities like walking, jogging, yoga, or swimming.
- Adequate Sleep: Sufficient and quality sleep is essential for stress management. Maintain a consistent sleep pattern and create a comfortable sleeping environment.
- Healthy Eating Habits: A balanced diet helps in managing stress. Reduce the intake of processed foods and caffeine, and consume fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and drink plenty of water.
- Breathing and Meditation: Deep breathing, meditation, and mindfulness are effective in reducing stress. Even for a short time, meditation can help calm the mind and manage stress.
- Time Management: Effective time management can reduce stress. Set priorities and avoid unnecessary tasks.
- Social Support: Positive interpersonal relationships decrease stress. Share emotions with social contacts and maintain relationships where you can ask for help when needed.
- Hobby Activities: Engaging in favorite hobbies or leisure activities helps relieve stress.
Moreover, the key to effective stress management lies in self-awareness. Gaining a clear understanding of what triggers your stress and consciously acknowledging your current response methods can significantly enhance your ability to manage stress efficiently.
Stress and Self-Awareness
Self-awareness involves a deep understanding of one’s inner self, heightening awareness of one’s emotions, thoughts, actions, and physical state.
Recognition of Emotions and Thoughts
Self-awareness starts with recognizing and understanding one’s own emotions and thoughts. Continually observing oneself in various situations helps to identify patterns in thoughts and feelings, leading to the discovery of fundamental stress triggers.
Identifying the Sources of Stress
Accurately understanding the causes of stress and their impact allows for the development of appropriate strategies for stress management, enabling more effective coping mechanisms.
Self-Acceptance and Self-Care
Acknowledging and accepting one’s emotions and thoughts is a part of self-acceptance. Self-awareness helps in recognizing one’s strengths and limitations, and underscores the importance of self-care.
Enhancing Emotional Regulation
Understanding and being aware of one’s emotions aids in emotional regulation, allowing for healthier expression and processing of feelings.
Listening to the Inner Voice
Paying attention to and examining the inner voice is a key aspect of self-awareness, essential for understanding personal needs. This process aids in making decisions aligned with personal values and goals.
Self-awareness is an ongoing journey. As one deepens their understanding of themselves, they can more effectively manage stress and maintain mental health.
Stress is deeply linked to your psychological situation, as you have read earlier. If you strengthen your self-awareness and understand the process of developing the power and attitude to take care of and manage yourself, you will be able to prevent stress and live a healthier life by effectively dealing with it even when you are stressed.
In times of stress, nothing seems to register to the eye or ear. It's only when issues are resolved that one finds peace of mind, awareness of oneself, and the ability to listen to the inner voice. However, given that we live in constant interaction with others, the idea of living without caring or stress is impractical. Often, we find ourselves surrounded by people who share our stressors.
To get out of the stress cluster and step into a new life, the first thing I need to do is to change. Organize the people to cut off, and even those who are not helpful don't have to waste my time putting time and effort into it.
- Take time to be alone.
- Do not fear solitude.
- Think of the breathing air around you as a positive particle, inhale it, and exhale your murky thoughts and minds.
- Before you go to bed, gather the energy of the night to your top of your head, embrace it, and shape the image that spreads throughout your body.
- And keep imaging that energy releases toxins in me and regenerates all the organs and cells, nerve strands.
- Make sure you read a book and exercise.
- When you sweat from exercise and your metabolism becomes active, your body wakes up and your brain wakes up.
- I hope you create a positive circuit with your waking brain and spin it vigorously.
- I always support a healthy life.
